Teachers Common Sense Guidelines

PURPOSE: for the protection of parents, teachers, students, mentors, and volunteers participating in BEST.
1. Teachers are schooled in proper procedures for maintaining good and safe order while educating students. Therefore, teachers should be the primary focus for maintaining and safeguarding the well being of students participating in BEST activities.
2. Teachers should acquire their principal’s approval for students to participate in BEST.
3. Teachers should inform parents about BEST and should acquire and retain school approved permission slips signed by parents for each student to participate in BEST. Permission slips must approve transportation to and from various activities and include students participating in competitions where an overnight stay may be elected. (Note 2.)
4. Teachers should initiate and maintain a Contract" committing teachers, mentors and students to comply with their team’s commitments. (Note 1.)
5. Teachers should ensure all participating parents, students, mentor/coaches and adult volunteers have read and understand these Common Sense Guidelines.
6. Teachers must ensure students are instructed on the proper use of potentially dangerous power tools and the proper use of personal protective equipment (e.g., goggles, ear plugs, etc.) when in the shop area. Adults should closely monitor students while using power tools.
7. Teachers should have a school approved emergency plan in place, in the event of an accident.
8. Teachers should periodically instruct students on safety and emergency plans.
9. Students transported from school grounds must be returned to school grounds. Students should not be returned to school grounds without prior arrangements for transportation home.
10. Adult mentors/coaches should not be alone with less than two students. Mentors/coaches, volunteers and students must always work as a group. BEST does not perform background checks on teachers, mentors or others participants. Teachers should follow the school district policies regarding the involvement of adult volunteers with their team.
